PURE Goal setting technique

How to be successful by creating positive and relevant goals?

The acronym P.U.R.E stands for Positively stated, Understood, Relevant, and Ethical. The technique was developed to address the common problems and challenges that organizations face when setting goals, such as lack of clarity, alignment, and accountability.

The PURE goal setting technique is a four-step process for creating effective goals:

  1. Positively stated: The goal must be stated in a positive way, focusing on what you want to achieve rather than what you want to avoid.

Questions:

-What is the positive outcome that you want to achieve?

-How will you phrase your goal in a positive way?

Example: Instead of saying "I want to stop procrastinating," say "I want to increase my productivity by completing tasks on time."

  1. Understood: The goal must be clearly understood by the goal setter and any relevant parties.

Questions:

-How will you ensure that your goal is clearly understood by everyone involved?

-What steps will you take to communicate your goal effectively?

Example: Instead of saying "I want to increase sales," say "I want to increase sales by 10% by the end of the quarter by implementing a new marketing strategy."

  1. Relevant: The goal must be relevant to the goal setter and align with their overall objectives.

Questions:

-How does this goal align with your overall objectives?

-Why is this goal important to you?

Example: Instead of saying "I want to become a professional athlete," say "I want to become a professional athlete because it aligns with my passion for fitness and competition, and it aligns with my long-term career goals."

  1. Ethical: The goal must be ethical and respect the rights of others.

Questions:

-How will you ensure that your goal is ethical and respects the rights of others?

-What steps will you take to consider the potential impact of your goal on others?

Example: Instead of saying "I want to make a lot of money," say "I want to make a lot of money by providing valuable services to my clients and treating them with respect and fairness."

The PURE goal setting method originates from the field of business management. It is a framework that helps individuals and organizations set clear, measurable and achievable goals. The PURE goal setting technique is widely used in organizations and businesses to improve performance, productivity and results.

Alternative Techniques for Goal Setting:

  1. SMART Goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This method is widely used in business and organizations to set clear and actionable goals.

  2. OKR (Objectives and Key Results): This method focuses on setting measurable objectives and key results that align with the overall strategy of the organization.

  3. HARD Goals: Specific, Difficult, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Similar to SMART goals, but with a focus on setting challenging and difficult goals that will push individuals and teams to achieve more than they thought possible.

  4. BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal): A long-term, ambitious goal that is intended to inspire and motivate individuals and teams to achieve great things.

  5. Reverse Goal Setting: Instead of setting a positive goal, this method involves identifying the things you want to avoid or eliminate in order to achieve your desired outcome.

  6. The Eisenhower Matrix: This goal setting technique involves sorting tasks into four categories: urgent and important, important but not urgent, urgent but not important, and not urgent or important.

  7. The Outcome Frame: This technique emphasizes on the end result, or outcome, of the goal, rather than the steps or actions needed to achieve it.

  8. The Unschedule: This technique involves leaving free time in your schedule and use that time to work on your goals, rather than scheduling specific times to work on them.
